DoT working on proposal to merge MTNL, BSNL

The department of telecommunications (DoT) is "working on" a proposal for merger of cash-strapped BSNL and MTNL, as part of efforts to revive the ailing state-owned telecom firms, a source said.

'Rs 500cr farm income got I-T relief sans check'

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has recommended that the income-tax department reexamine all cases where agricultural income exceeds a certain threshold - say Rs 10 lakh - to ensure that exemption is allowed only to genuine taxpayers. CAG found that agricultural income of nearly Rs 500 crore was allowed as exempt without adequate verification.

RBI eases foreign borrowing norms for NBFCs

The RBI on Tuesday relaxed end-use restrictions on external commercial borrowings (ECBs) for companies and non-bank lenders. Borrowings up to seven years can be availed by non-banking finance companies for on-lending. Corporates can also raise seven-year funds for capital expenditure. Both these borrowings were not permitted earlier.

Electric vehicles makers welcome duty reduction

The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) on Saturday welcomed the reduction of GST on electric vehicles to 5 per cent, saying it is in line with the government's steps to promote eco-friendly mobility, even as it sought a similar cut in spare batteries. SMEV director general Sohinder Gill said with the reduction in GST, the gap between prices of EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles will also be reduced and will thus play a part in faster adoption of electric mobility.
