Focus on moving up services value chain rather than manufacturing to propel India into 'Amrit Kaal': Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan
India's ambition to march into `Amrit Kaal’ by 2047 is an important one but the current pace of growth is not enough to get us there as we will still remain a lower middle-income economy by then, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan said here on Saturday. Speaking at an interactive session organised by Manthan, Rajan mooted a focus on high-value added services instead of manufacturing to productively harness the country’s demographic dividend and propel the country into 'Amrit Kaal' because if India does not grow faster, it would grow older demographically before it gets richer.

If growth rate is not over 6%, India will remain lower middle economy by 2047: Raghuram Rajan
Former RBI governor warns that India will remain a lower middle-income country by 2047 if the growth rate remains at 6% annually without population rise. The country will reach the end of its demographic dividend and face the burden of an aging population. The per capita income will only quadruple to $10,000 if the current growth rate continues. Some southern states are experiencing a decline in fertility rate, leading to a slower population growth. The current pace of growth is insufficient to employ new labor force entrants and make the country richer before it gets older.

Why Airtel, Reliance Jio & Vodafone support this US bill
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is urging the Indian government to adopt a bill similar to the one proposed in the US Congress. The bill, called the Lowering Broadband Costs for Consumers Act of 2023, aims to make large internet apps contribute to infrastructure costs in order to lower broadband costs for consumers. It also proposes that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate social media platforms, streaming services, and other edge service providers to contribute to a universal fund for building networks. The bill classifies various services including social media platforms, streaming services, video gaming services, and search engines under edge service providers. COAI believes that this bill supports their stance and wants only large traffic generators to contribute to infrastructure costs in India.

Retribution, grudge behind killing of Karni outfit chief?
The assassination of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi seems to be fueled by the resentments of the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate. Gogamedi was accused of abandoning protests against the encounter of gangster Anandpal Singh and allegedly misusing the funds collected in his name. The syndicate's grudge was further fueled by the proximity of Rohit Godara, Bishnoi's associate, to Anandpal's daughter. The caste angle to the killing has been dismissed by officials.

This was the highest-ever figure recorded, in contrast to the lean daily numbers seen during the Diwali season. Industry insiders attribute this to the high advance fares set by airlines before Diwali, which led travellers to choose AC classes on premium trains instead. However, looking at the excitement in the audience, airlines later lowered the fares.

Air India is being investigated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for using a Boeing 777 with insufficient emergency oxygen on a recent Delhi-US nonstop flight. The pilot refused to operate the aircraft due to the oversight, and the DGCA has requested information from the airline. Most aircraft have enough oxygen for 12-15 minutes per passenger, but planes flying over high mountains, such as the Hindu Kush range, need extra oxygen for 25-30 minutes.
