Can leader of opposition status be withdrawn? SC to decide

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine an important constitutional question — Can a Speaker or chairman withdraw the ‘leader of opposition’ recognition from the leader of a party which has the highest numerical strength among opposition groups, but its number is below 10% of House strength. The decision could have a bearing on the functioning of vital democratic institutions like Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, assemblies and legislative councils.

Over 16L gave up citizenship since 2011, EAM tells Rajya Sabha

The government on Thursday said in Parliament that more than 16 lakh Indians gave up their citizenship since 2011, including 2,25,620 last year, the highest during the period. The lowest number of people renouncing Indian citizenship during this period was 85,256 in 2020.
