New variants of Omicron seen in 7 Maharashtra patients

Amidst rising Covid-19 cases in the state, health officials on Saturday said seven patients were found infected with newer Omicron sublineages of BA.4 (four patients) and BA.5 (three patients). These cases were found in Pune. Maharashtra is the third state to report these newer sublineages, which are responsible for the fifth wave in South Africa. 36 dead in every 100 accidents, severity at 20-yr high in 2020

Govt lets coal mines hike output without feedback

The environment ministry has allowed coal mines with clearances to increase output by 40% to step up production by up to 50% without seeking feedback from locals, it said in a memo reviewed by Reuters. Birth, death registers will be linked to Census: Amit Shah

Union home minister Amit Shah said on Monday that the population Census, which was due in 2021 but had to be kept on hold due to the pandemic, will take place in a new avatar as an e-census that “will shape policies for the next 25 years”. Shah added that “birth and death registers will be linked to it”.

Salman Khan, Prithviraj Sukumaran unveil 'Major' trailer

Bollywood star Salman Khan unveiled the Hindi trailer of Adivi Sesh starrer 'Major' on Monday. The Malayalam version of the trailer has been unveiled by Prithviraj Sukumaran while Tollywood star Mahesh Babu has launched the Telugu trailer of 'Major'. Bankrolled by Sony Pictures International Productions in association with Mahesh Babu's GMB Entertainment and A+S Movies, 'Major' is directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, and also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Saiee Manjrekar, Prakash Raj, Revathi and Murali Sharma. Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, the film will release in theatres on June 3.

Rupee slumps to all-time low of 77.44 on forex outflows

Extending its losses for a second day, the rupee on Monday slumped by 54 paise to close at a record low of 77.44 against the US dollar, pressured by the strength of the American currency overseas and unabated foreign fund outflows.
